All Buying Guides
Every buying guide we publish, grouped by category. Each guide narrows a category down to a handful of picks, gives each one a role rather than a score, and lists what is wrong with it alongside what is right.
Reader-supported. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. A commission never buys a recommendation — see our ranking method and affiliate disclaimer.
Appliances
Washers, dryers and freezers. The two things that decide these purchases are what the machine can physically handle and whether it is rated for the temperature of the room it will live in.
- Washing Machines with an Agitator
- Compact Washers and Dryers
- Portable Washing Machines
- Chest Freezers
- Small Upright Freezers
- Mini Freezers
Kitchen
Refrigeration and coffee. Venting direction and cabinet width eliminate most of the market before you compare a single feature.
Home & Garden
Air quality, cooling, sewing and lawn care. Several of these categories are full of products that do not do what their listings imply — we say which.
Baby & Kids
Car seats, strollers and high chairs. Every car seat sold in the US meets the same safety standard, so what actually differs is fit, installation and how long it lasts.
Auto & RV
Power, refrigeration and carrying things. Your vehicle’s ratings — tongue weight, battery capacity — decide these purchases more than any product specification.
Electronics
Screens, computers and cameras. The specification on the box is rarely the one that decides whether you are happy.
Outdoor & Power
Generators, pools and outdoor play. This is the category where safety guidance matters most, and we lead with it rather than burying it.
How we decide what goes in a guide
We start by working out what the buying decision actually turns on in that category — usually two or three specifications, not the twenty on the box. Then we remove anything discontinued or poorly supported, read the owner reviews written months after purchase rather than days, and give each remaining pick a role: best overall, best for small spaces, best on a budget. The full method is on our How We Rank page.
