NikolaToy Review: What Is Worth Buying and What Is Not

A direct look at the NikolaToy catalogue: where the engine models are worth buying, where the product documentation fails, and which categories to skip.
TR900 turbofan engine desktop model, full version

NikolaToy is a Shopify store selling mechanical curiosities: Stirling engines, turbofan cutaways, micro internal combustion engines, desktop gadgets and a long tail of collectables. It is not a toy shop in the ordinary sense, and it is not a model shop either. Working out what it is good at is the main problem a first-time buyer has.

This review covers the part of the catalogue we think is worth your attention, the engineering and engine models, and is direct about the parts we would not buy from anywhere. We have not handled these products, so treat this as a careful reading of what the store documents rather than a hands-on test.

How BuyerRank makes money: the links in this guide go to NikolaToy. If you buy through one of them we may earn a commission from the maker, at no extra cost to you. That commission does not change what we include or how we rank it, and we say plainly below what each set does badly as well as what it does well.

What the store actually sells

The catalogue runs to several hundred items across collections including turbofan engines, Stirling engines, real running engines, DIY kits, desktop gadgets, replica models and character collectables. The strongest and most coherent part of it is the engine section: Stirling engines in half a dozen configurations, 3D-printed turbofan cutaways in two sizes, a hand-turned Wankel model, and Toyan micro internal combustion engines that genuinely run on methanol.

That section is where the store has something other retailers do not, and it is what we based our guide to the best desktop engine models on. The rest of the catalogue is a mix, and it is worth knowing which part you are shopping in.

Where the documentation is good and where it is not

This is the most useful thing we can tell you about the store, and it is a mixed report. The engine and gadget listings are well documented: exact dimensions in centimetres and inches, weights in grams, materials, battery capacity, manufacturing process. The TR900 turbofan listing gives both size options, both weights, the PLA material and the 2000 mAh battery. That is more than many specialist retailers publish.

Elsewhere the documentation thins out sharply. Several product pages in other collections carry no description at all beyond a title and photographs, which makes it impossible to compare two similar items or to know what is in the box. Our advice is simple: if a listing does not state the size, the material and what is included, ask the store before ordering rather than guessing from photos.

Where to start

1Stirling engine model with power generation and indicator light
Best overall

Stirling Engine with Power Generation

A Stirling engine that drives a small generator and lights an indicator, so you watch heat become electricity.

  • Runs on a small alcohol burner, no batteries
  • Drives a generator and lights an LED
  • Shows the whole heat to motion to electricity chain
  • Keeps running as long as there is fuel
  • Involves an open flame on your desk
  • Needs a minute of fiddling to start each time

2Small 20 cm turbofan engine desktop model
Best for a small desk

TR900 Turbofan Model, 20 cm

The same turbofan idea at 21 x 12 x 10 cm and 230 g, which fits beside a monitor instead of replacing it.

  • 21 x 12 x 10 cm, 230 g
  • Motorised like the large version
  • Fits an ordinary desk
  • Less internal detail than the full version
  • PLA plastic construction

3Toyan L100 micro internal combustion engine gift set
Best first real engine

Toyan L100 Micro IC Engine

A genuine single-cylinder four-stroke that runs on methanol. Arrives assembled, so it can run the day it lands.

  • A real running internal combustion engine
  • Aluminium alloy construction
  • Ships assembled and ready to start
  • Fuel included in the gift set
  • Burns fuel, gets hot and is loud
  • Not a toy and not for unsupervised use

What we would skip

The store also stocks replica weapons, high-velocity slingshots and similar shooting gear, and character collectables tied to film and comic properties. We do not cover the first group, because choosing between them is not advice we are willing to give, and we would be careful with the second, because licensing on character merchandise sold this way is often unclear.

We would also avoid anything in the catalogue with no written specification, whatever the category. Not because it is necessarily bad, but because you cannot judge it, and a photograph of a metal object tells you nothing about its size or its weight.

Buying from a store like this

Two practical points apply to any direct-from-maker store of this kind. Shipping comes from overseas, so plan on a longer wait than a domestic marketplace and read the stated shipping terms on the product page. And returns on niche mechanical items are rarely as simple as returning a mainstream product, so be confident before ordering rather than treating the first purchase as a trial.

If you want to test the store cheaply, one of the smaller Stirling models or the 20 cm turbofan is a low-commitment way to see how the packaging, the finish and the delivery hold up before spending more.

Common questions

Are the Toyan engines sold here genuine?

Toyan is an established maker of micro internal combustion engines sold through many retailers, and the listings here describe the standard L100 and L200 units with the usual aluminium alloy construction and methanol fuel. As with any reseller, check the listing states the model number you expect before ordering.

Do the Stirling engines come with fuel?

Read each listing. Some sets include a burner and starter fuel and some do not, and alcohol for burners is easy to buy locally in any case. What matters more is that you have a safe surface and ventilation before the first run.

Is this a good place to buy a gift?

For someone with an engineering or mechanical interest, yes, and the engine models in particular are hard to find elsewhere. For a general gift, no: the catalogue is specialised, several categories are unsuitable, and the documentation gaps make it easy to buy the wrong thing.

How long does delivery take?

The store advertises worldwide shipping but delivery windows depend on destination and are stated at checkout rather than universally. Assume international shipping timescales, and if a purchase is for a specific date, order well ahead.

The verdict

NikolaToy is worth buying from for one thing in particular: working engine models that most retailers do not carry, documented well enough to compare. The Stirling engines and the Toyan micro combustion engines are the reason to be here. The rest of the catalogue is uneven, several categories are ones we would not recommend at all, and the listings without specifications are not worth the risk. Shop the engine section, read the dimensions, and it is a good store. Treat it as a general gift shop and it is not.
